Kino, Juana and their infant son, Coyotito, live in a house by the sea. One morning a scorpion drops bites little Coyotito. While Juana cares for Coyotito, Kino takes their "treasured" canoe out pearl diving and finds a valuable, large pearl. They suffer through an attempted robbery of the pearl, pearl buyers try to "bargain" with Kino, witnessing all kinds of greed. They have trouble selling the pearl and Juana considers throwing it back into the ocean. Kino kills a mystery man in self-defense, and escapes with his family. In the end, they get caught but before they do, Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean.
