Streetcar Named Desire, A

Blanche DuBois, a Southern belle arrives at the apartment of her sister Stella Kowalski in New Orleans; the streetcar route she takes is named "Desire". Blanche is welcomed with some trepidation by Stella, who fears the reaction of her husband, Stanley. Blanche was forced to take time off from her teaching position because of an affair with an underage student. In contrast to Stella and Blanche, Stella's husband, Stanley Kowalski, is a force of nature. He is physically and emotionally abusive to Stella. Their final, inevitable confrontation—a rape—results in Blanche's nervous breakdown.
