The U.S. government has chosen Patty Bergen's town for a Nazi prisoner camp. The prisoners are brought to Patty's father's store for sun hats. Only one can speak English, so he interprets for the prisoners. His name is Frederick Anton Reiker, known as Anton. They become friends. Patty’s mother always criticizes her appearance and her father hates her. Anton escapes from the camp and Patty hides him above the garage. Over the next few months, Patty deals with crushing losses. She draws strength from a ring Anton gave her before leaving. She learns to accept that her parents will never love her, realizing it isn't her fault.
