Black Like Me

Set in 1959, the author, a white journalist from a privileged Southern lifestyle, describes his experiences after a social experiment where he darkened his skin and traveled through the South in order to find out how it felt to be black. He trudged southern streets for a place where he could eat or rest, looked vainly for a job other than menial labor, and crossed the line into a country of hate, fear, and hopelessness--the country of the American Black man.
