The story of idealistic Francie Nolan and her family living in pre-WWI slums of Brooklyn. Her family included her mother, Katie who works as a janitor in their tenement; her father, Johnny, an alcoholic singing waiter; and her brother Neeley. But, Francie loves her father, but he drinks too much. Eventually, Johnny is kicked out of the union because of his drinking and dies right before his third child is born. Due to the death of her father and the new baby, Francie drops out of school and takes a job. Eventually, she meets the right man. Katie marries a police officer who offers the family a better life.
